Amsterdam and Paris

A couple of weeks ago my boyfriend and I had some work in Amsterdam for a few days. We usually drive from as we have lots of stuff to carry with us but this time we were burden free, so decided to take the train from London. The highspeed Eurostar from London to Amsterdam is not quite up and running yet so we had to change at Brussels. Neither of us had been to Brussels before so we decided to have a wander round there for a couple of hours before catching the slower intercity train to Amsterdam. Unfortunately, this was a bit of a mistake. We hadn't looked up any information about Brussels before we left, just presuming that the station would be in the city centre. Little did we know there are quite a few stations in Brussels and, with no clue as to how to navigate the city or its transport system and a very early start, we decided to skip this and head straight to Amsterdam. We couldn't get the high-speed Thalys with our ticket so had to wait an hour in the bitter cold for the next train, which stopped everywhere.
Long train = time to work and spy on new cities at high speed from the window
When we arrived in Amsterdam we found our hotel was only a few minutes from the station and was very homely and comfortable. Although super-duper fancy hotels are fun, when you're working long hours you just want somewhere clean and comfortable. As we both had so much work on, on top of the work we were doing in Amsterdam, there wasn't much time for typical holiday-type pursuits.

If you're ever in Amsterdam I would definitely recommend eating at La Place. It is amazing! There's so much fresh, delicious food to choose from, and the cakes and pastries are absolutely delicious. De Beiaard Spui 30 is a great place to spend the evening with friends. It's lovely in the summer as you can sit outside by the canal and watch the world go buy. The inside is nice and cosy for colder climes, and the extensive beer menu lends itself well to lively conversations tucked away from the winter weather.

We took the train back to London via Paris as I wanted to see the elle exhibition at the Pompidou Centre. I found the hidden A Room of One's Own collection interesting and some of the sculptural pieces, but, on the whole, I wasn't particularly impressed by it. I was also quite surprised that you seem to be permitted to take photos of the exhibitons. There were people with their iPhones and DSLRs snapping away. I can't imagine that happening in London.

The views from the top floor of the Pompidou are wonderful, and you can see for miles. We caught it just as the sun was setting, which, of course, wanted us to run away to Paris and live the romantic Parisian dream.

Trying to find vegetarian food in Paris is difficult and as we only had a few hours there we ate at the Pompidou cafe. The food was really good and the patisseries were very yummy. Plus the people watching from there is great! I don't know if you're similar to me, but I find people fascinating. I don't like to judge them, or make sarcastic sartorial comments, but I love to observe and understand all of the different intricacies that make people unique yet the same.

We then walked over the Neuf Bridge to Notre Dame to hear the bells ring before heading to meet a friend for a drink. Then on to the train back to London, settling down with some work.

So, there you have it. A whistle stop tour of Europe whilst still managing to do just as much work as I would've done at home. The advantages of being self-employed and without having to always work from 'the office'.

Do you have any must-see tips in Paris or Amsterdam? Or Brussels? I was disappointed I didn't get to see it.

Stationery Treats from Paris

I have a soft spot for stationery and thought I'd share with you a couple of bits I picked up in Paris recently. They're just so cute, I couldn't resist!

This book is so wonderful that I don't know if I'll ever be able to bring myself to write in it,
for fear of 'ruining' it!
Likewise, these Polariod notelets are so pretty that I don't know if I'll ever send them.
I might just frame them and put there somewhere I can see them whilst I'm working.

Sandra Dieckmann : Furry Faces Zine

A few days ago I woke up to find a little package on my doormat and inside was the wonderful Furry Faces Zine by Sandra Dieckmann. Look how fantastic all the furry friends are! I then spent a good chunk of my morning pulling faces in the mirror to make myself look like the illustrated creatures. Turns out I can make myself look like the fox most of all.
 Fancy that.

Folksy Finds: Valentine's Gifts

I'm not really a big fan of big corporations trying to shove pink hearts down your necks, guilting you in to draining your bank balance to display your affection for loved ones on Valentine's day. True love can't be bought. However, if you are head-over-heels in love with me and desperately want to buy me a gift I wouldn't mind if you bought me any of these delights, all handmade by Folksy artists.

I wouldn't mind at all.

Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration

A little while ago I went to the launch party for Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration at 123 Bethnal Green Road. It was a fantastic night full of laughter and meeting new people, surrounded by creative talent, music and dancing.

The book features 30 illustrators, selected from an open brief, and profiles 50 ethical fashion designers, achieving a wonderful depth of aesthetic pleasures. Readers of Amelia's Magazine and her previous book, Amelia's Anthology of Illustration, will be aware of her commitment to environmental sustainability and fighting against climate change. It is refreshing to see a book such as this in a world of homogeneous fast fashion, that often uses chemical dyes in clothes which are headed straight for landfill after a season's wear.

The Bunker Cafe was filled with an excitable buzz surrounding the copies of the book and amazing cake by Lily Vanilli, and the goody bags were stuffed with delights including treats from Tatty Devine, Dr Hauschka and Moleskine. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a copy of the book at the event as I was only equipped with an antiquated form of payment, the humble cheque book, which sadly wasn't sufficient.

The cake was eaten. Every last bit.

There was music from 6 Day Riot and DJ sets from The Pipettes and Will from the Mystery Jets upstairs in the Scout Hut, and cake and cosy chats to be had downstairs in the Bunker Cafe. 123 Bethnal Green Road seems to be a wonderfully cavernous place full of creative nooks and crannies, which I am looking forward to exploring soon. They have a pop-up shop of selected designers from Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration until 13th February so make sure to head on down and take a look.

I turned up to the party on my own and any fears I had of wandering around solo soon disappeared after I got chatting to PR girl and Stylist Bella, and Gemma Freeman, of nollie, giving a girl's take on snowboarding and surfing style. I also bumped into the wonderful illustrators Abby Wright, Avril Kelly and Emma Block. You might remember Abby was one of my Featured Illustrators a few months ago...you can see the feature here.

Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration is available to buy online here and from good independent bookshops.

Winter Picnics and Dark Nights

When I was a child, I didn't used to get bored in the winter. My brother and I couldn't play outside until past our bedtimes in the summer evening light, or serve invisible food and drink from our 'cafe' under the big, stripey umbrella in the garden. But, we were lucky enough to have a Mum with an imagination and sense of playfulness that turned every day in to a new adventure. If it was raining or cold, we'd have a picnic in the living room, complete with itchy woolie picnic blankets and a cool-box of sandwiches and snacks.

These days winter seems so much gloomier. As the evenings draw in, the sense of optimism that the sunshine brings seems to be disappear over the horizon. I struggle to keep positive in the winter but have recently remembered how much I used to love it. And why I used to love it. Long walks in the forest finding the perfect pinecone or brightest leaf, Shepherd's Pie and Bread Pudding, curling up with a book in my favourite corner, riding my bicycle down steep hills and pretending to be as fearless as my brother. Life is so much more complicated these days that we can forget the things that make us happier. Take a bit of time out and brighten up your winter day.
